Though his name is less widely known today, Gouverneur Morris was a leading Founding Father who made many major contributions to the young American republic. In this presentation, Timothy R. Schantz will give a brief review of Gouverneur Morris, his life and service to our nation, most notably at the Constitutional Convention and in his years as Minister Plenipotentiary to France during its Revolution and ensuing Terror, and his connection to Alexander Hamilton and his family. Schantz will then review the historiography and examine reasons why Gouverneur Morris may have often been neglected in his critical role as “penman of the Constitution.”

Next, Schantz will discuss current efforts to rectify this neglect and restore Gouverneur Morris to his rightful position among the leading Founders. Notably, he will discuss recent historical efforts to shine a new light on Morris’ work, the initiative to help restore his resting place at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in the South Bronx (The Morrisania Project) and to commemorate his seminal role in crafting the oldest written and still operative Constitution in the world at the site of the boarding house where he stayed during the early weeks of September, 1787 (Ms. Dalley’s between 2nd/3rd and Market) in Philadelphia.

Finally, he will highlight plans in anticipation of the nation’s Semiquincentennial and the decade-long reparation in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the Constitution itself in 2037.
