In 1774 and into 1775, many American colonists were reeling under the repressive measures of the British crown. While some counseled unconditional loyalty and submission to royal authority, others vocally sought redress for their grievances. This presentation examines the war of words between the Reverend Samuel Seabury, writing under the pseudonym of “A. W. Farmer” (A Westchester Farmer), and the young Alexander Hamilton, a recent immigrant who quickly adopted the patriots’ cause. In response to Seabury’s three pamphlets attacking Congress, Hamilton responded forcefully with “A Full Vindication of the Measures of Congress” and “The Farmer Refuted,” writing under the pseudonym “A Friend to America.” As the speakers will discuss, these pamphlets provide vivid examples of the tense political climate in the months before the eruption of hostilities. Moreover, even in these early writings, Hamilton reveals a profound understanding of the concepts of freedom and justice, as well as a vision for what America could and should become.

Presented by Mariana Oller, Chair of the AHA Society and Associate Curator of Special Collections at Wellesley College, together with Dr. Thomas Oller, the Vice Chair of the AHA Society and a Master Lecturer in Writing at Boston University.
