Alexander Hamilton’s Early Military Service (1775-1777)

This year, America marks the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the Revolutionary War. As part of the commemorations, the AHA Society will examine Alexander Hamilton’s role in this conflict. Soon after arriving in America and starting his studies at King’s College, young Alexander Hamilton got involved in defending the rights of the colonists against the Crown. At first, he applied his talents to writing essays. However, after fighting broke out, he abandoned his studies and dedicated himself entirely to the Patriot cause. In this presentation, Mariana Oller and Tom Oller will focus on Hamilton’s early military service, as a militiaman in the Corsicans and the Hearts of Oak, and later as an artillery captain, through multiple campaigns up to the moment when he became an aide-de-camp to General George Washington.
