Greetings! I am Terysia Herbert, the newly appointed Director of the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS). I am honoured to have been selected for this position and look forward to furthering the work of the organization. I bring to the table a love for Nevis and a passion for the island’s development. A daughter of the soil, I am the granddaughter to two prominent Nevisians, Mr. Fitzroy Williams, better known as ‘Teach’, and the late, great Patricia Williams. I however migrated to the United States during my teenage years and spent nearly 20 years in the U.S., specifically New York City. As one of the oldest cities in the U.S. and a top tourism destination, living in New York fostered my love for heritage tourism, architecture and cultural perseveration. I moved back home to Nevis during the height of the pandemic and have since been employed by the Ministry of Health.
My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Natural Science from Fordham University in New York, as well as a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Community Health Education from CUNY Hunter College, also in New York. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Urban Planning with a concentration in Urban Design at Jackson State University, a Historically Black College/University (HBCU).
My professional background includes my appointment as the Education & Prevention Officer at the Health Promotion Unit for the past 3.5 years where I was primarily involved in program and event planning. I engaged and fostered collaborative partnerships with both government agencies such as the Ministries of Education and Tourism, as well as with private entities and non-governmental organizations. I also served as the HIV counselor and thus have ample experience maneuvering sensitive situations.
Prior to this, I served as a Program Manager/Study Coordinator in the Department of Family and Social Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. There I successfully planned and coordinated large-scale research and social events catering for up to five hundred persons. I was also heavily involved in research and evaluation, a skillset I plan to utilize to further the goals of NHCS.
My goal at the NHCS is to identify ways that our heritage and culture can be leveraged to further the development of our island through increased visibility of our heritage and eco-tourism products. I also aim to improve local buy-in and appreciation of our history and to overall further and elevate the work being done at NCHS.
I look forward to your support as I embark on this important venture. I am grateful to be representing Nevis in this way and hope to accomplish milestones that we can all be proud of. For those of you who are interested in supporting our efforts in any way, please feel free to contact me by Email at your convenience.
